Effective leadership is crucial to successful outcomes for students, and is an important component of Professional Learning and Development (PLD).
The Ministry has been working with the Education Council to ensure there will be a coherent programme of support through its newly established Centre for Leadership Excellence.
While the Centre becomes established, the Ministry has developed an interim support package for leadership which will be in place for the next two years.
We have reviewed our centrally-funded support for school leaders, and designed our interim leadership support package based on what has worked well, what needs to work better, and feedback and ideas from the sector.
The leadership package will be less prescribed and more responsive to the needs of leadership in CoLs, schools and kura.
Leadership Advisors will support beginning principals with tailored, practical advice at a regional level.

The Emerging Leaders support will help CoLs | Kāhui Ako mature through the development of collaborative partnerships, local curriculum responses to local issues, and creating the conditions for innovation.
Through the RFP we’re asking providers for bold and innovative ideas to meet the needs of teachers and leaders in the CoL | Kāhui Ako environment. We want providers to design a solution that identifies potential leaders and then develops and nurtures those leaders to use their emerging leadership capabilities.
We expect providers to start working with Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako in April 2017. At the end of 2018 we expect a final Emerging Leaders package to be scaled across Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako nationwide. For more details on the programme you can view the RFP on GETS.
